A native Texan, Dr. Holcomb received a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M before attending Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. After receiving his Medical Degree, Dr. Holcomb served his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of California HC Moffit-UC Hospitals in San Francisco.

Following his internship, he was a General Medicine Officer in the United States Army, stationed in the Philippines. Moving to San Antonio, he completed a two-year residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and then completed a fellowship in the subspecialty of Pulmonary Medicine. Next, he was the Director to the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Brooke Army Hospital, a position he held until July, 1982, when he and Dr. Andrews opened their private practice.

He maintains a position as Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, as well as Fellowship in the American College of Chest Physicians and memberships in the American College of Research Professionals, the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Physicians, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Texas Medical Association, and the Bexar County Medical Society, of which he has been President. He maintains special interests in intensive care, respiratory insufficiency, adult respiratory distress syndrome and asbestosis. He is an Instructor in Advanced Cardiopulmonary Life Support.
